A Prayer

"Our Father..."
I wonder at my relationship with You,
trying to measure how many
points I've scored against
the innocence I've lost.
I'm always in debt.

"...who art in heaven..."
Where is heaven?
You seem so far away at times,
but never further than my heart.
So I could not give it away
to someone whose heart is empty of You,
but I fear Your living conditions
are rather questionable.

"...hallowed be Thy name..."
I use it constantly,
but rarely reverently.
I pay You lip service, yet
the words are hollow,
not hallowed.

"...Thy kingdom come..."
Sometimes I fear the time
when You will come like a
thief in the night –
will there be anything worth taking?

"...Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven..."
What is Your will?
I strive, I seek, but
I cannot find.
How is it done in heaven?
I am made of earth;
this clay needs
broken to Your will.

"...Give us this day our daily bread..."
I starve my soul
but feed my faults.
And then I wonder what
is wrong with me.

"...and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us..."
Yes, throw it as far
as the east is from the west
and forget, but I do not.
I still find it in my memory
and throw it back to you.
You choose not to catch it, repeatedly,
but I still have not caught on.

"...Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil..."
Deliver me, Lord,
and mostly from myself –
because what it all really
comes down to is my choice between
Your righteousness and my selfishness.

"...for Thine is the Kingdom, the Power and the Glory forever..."
And humble me.
Remind me I'm a beggar at Your Kingdom's gate,
a weak child hiding in Your Power,
a worshipper at the foot of Your Glory.

And Amen.
